Donegal Tweed for Women

Donegal tweed is the cloth we reach for when the year turns. Woven in County Donegal by Molloy & Sons, it is recognised by its fleck: small bursts of colour spun into the yarn, so that a navy reads as sea and sky rather than a single flat shade, and a brown holds the reds and golds of bog and bracken.

Tweed has mostly been cut for men. We cut it for women, and we cut it our own way. The Tweed Jacket is a double-breasted jacket with a boxy shoulder and an oversized bow at the back; the Raglan Coat drops the shoulder seam so the cloth can move; the Keeper Tail Coat and the Amy Coat are our answer to a winter coat you will keep for good. Each piece is fully lined in Irish linen and made to order in Ireland, in three to four weeks.

These are not costume pieces. Worn over linen in October or over knitwear in January, a Donegal tweed coat is the most Irish thing in the wardrobe and the most useful.

What is Donegal tweed?

A pure wool cloth woven in County Donegal, in the north-west of Ireland, and known for its fleck: flecks of colour spun into the yarn before weaving, which give the cloth its depth. Ours is woven by Molloy & Sons.

What is the difference between Donegal tweed and Harris tweed?

Both are wool tweeds from the Atlantic edge. Harris tweed is woven in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and protected by its own trademark; Donegal tweed is woven in County Donegal and is known for its flecked yarn rather than a mark. We use Donegal tweed because it is Irish and because the fleck suits the way we colour a collection.

Is Donegal tweed warm?

Yes. It is a dense, all-wool cloth, and every one of our tweed pieces is fully lined in Irish linen, which adds warmth without weight. The coats are cut to layer over knitwear in the coldest months; the jacket is a three-season piece.

How long does a made-to-order tweed piece take?

Three to four weeks. Each piece is made to order in Ireland. If you need it for a date, tell us when you order and we will say honestly whether we can meet it.
