The Bloomers A little rebellion
In the 1850s women were expected to wear floor-length skirts over layers of petticoats, whatever the weather and however far they had to walk. Amelia Bloomer, who edited a newspaper for women called The Lily, began wearing a shorter skirt over full trousers gathered at the ankle, and printed a picture of herself in it. Hundreds of women wrote asking for the pattern, and the trousers took her name.
We made our first pair in 2021: an easy, gathered shape with an elasticated waist, nipped in at the ankle. They became a favourite almost at once and have been one of our best sellers ever since, in stripes, gingham, tweed and now Steam.
Wear them with trainers, with heels, or peeking out from under a dress, for the women who wore them first.

Linen, with weight.
A soft grey herringbone Irish linen, with the weight of autumn in it.
Herringbone is a weave you notice slowly. From across a room Steam reads as a plain, soft grey; up close the zigzag comes through, and with it a texture closer to a winter coat than a summer shirt. It is thicker and warmer than most linen, and still breathes the way linen does.
We cut it into a top and a pair of Bloomers, made to be worn together, or with Cortado for something richer.

Every piece is cut and sewn in Belfast by one of our sewists, who sees it through from the first cut to the last stitch.
We keep our making close to home on purpose. Belfast was once the linen capital of the world, and the skills that built it are rare now. Making here is how we keep them alive.
